Discovering computers with management controllers is helpful for when you want to provision AMT-based computers in-band by using Configuration Manager 2007 SP1 and later. For more information about AMT provisioning, see How to Provision Computers for AMT.

After management controllers are discovered, you can identify them using the procedures in How to Identify Computers That Can Support Out of Band Management.
The discovery process requires that the out of band service point is installed and that it has an account that it can use to successfully access the management controllers, which might require that you configure AMT Provisioning and Discovery Accounts. The out of band service point looks for network devices that are listening on the IANA registered port numbers TCP 16992 and TCP 16993.
Management controllers can be discovered in the following ways:
- During network discovery, if the
administrator has configured network discovery to include
management controllers.
- When an administrator initiates discovery of
management controllers for a collection or a resource.
- When the out of band service point provisions
an AMT-based computer. This process happens automatically.
Use the following procedures to discover computers with management controllers.
To configure network discovery of management controllers

In the Configuration Manager console, navigate to System Center Configuration Manager / Site Database / Site Management / <site name> / Site Settings / Discovery Methods.

Right-click Network Discovery, and then click Properties.

On the General tab, select Enable discovery of out of band management controllers.

Click OK.

To initiate discovery of computers with management controllers for a collection

In the Configuration Manager console, navigate to System Center Configuration Manager / Site Database / Computer Management / Collections.

Right-click the collection for which you want to initiate discovery of management controllers, click Out of Band Management, and then click Discover Management Controllers.

Click OK in the confirmation dialog box.
To initiate discovery of selected computers with management controllers

In the Configuration Manager console, navigate to System Center Configuration Manager / Site Database / Computer Management / Collections.

From one of the collections, select one or multiple resources for which you want to initiate discovery of management controllers, right-click and select Out of Band Management, and then click Discover Management Controllers.

Click OK in the confirmation dialog box.
