Network Discovery can be scheduled for a single run or to run on a recurring basis. Unlike the Active Directory discovery methods, this method cannot be run on an ad hoc basis. However, if you want to run the method as soon as possible after configuring it, you can simply schedule it with a start time in the very near future.

Multiple discovery schedules can be created at the same time using this method. If this is done, all schedules will result in a Network Discovery run, and the run will be in the form in which it is configured at the time the run begins. In the event of a recurring schedule, this is also true.

Note
You must have Modify permission for the Site Security object class to configure this discovery method. For more information about security permissions, see Classes and Instances for Object Security in Configuration Manager.

To schedule a Network Discovery run

  1. In the Configuration Manager console, navigate to System Center Configuration Manager / Site Database / Site Management / <site name> / Site Settings / Discovery Methods.

  2. Right-click Network Discovery, and then click Properties.

  3. On the Schedule tab, click the New icon to set a schedule for running the configured Network Discovery.

  4. In the Custom Schedule dialog box, set a Start time using the drop-down list.

  5. Using the Duration drop-down lists, select a duration for the discovery run. This will serve as the maximum length of time for the run. If all items are discovered before this time is up, the run will continue with minimal network traffic until this time is up, searching for (and not finding) additional resources. If the run is not completed before this time is up, only resources discovered before the time expires will be included.

  6. In the Recurrence pattern group box, select how this schedule will recur. Four choices are available:

    • None: The scheduled run is a one-time-only event.

    • Weekly: The scheduled run will occur weekly at the same start time.

    • Monthly: The scheduled run will occur monthly at the same start time.

    • Custom Interval: The scheduled run will occur at a custom interval set by the administrator.

  7. Click OK, and then click OK again.
