You might need to configure an AMT Provisioning and Discovery Account in a Configuration Manager 2007 SP1 (and later) site so that Configuration Manager can discover computers that have management controllers and provision them for out of band management. Use the following information to determine whether you need to configure an AMT Provisioning and Discovery account.
Note |
---|
The information in this topic applies only to Configuration Manager 2007 SP1 and later. |
In the following statements, provisioning in-band refers to using the client in Configuration Manager 2007 SP1 and later for AMT provisioning; provisioning out of band refers to provisioning without the client installed from Configuration Manager 2007 SP1 and later and is suitable for new computers. For more information, see About AMT Provisioning for Out of Band Management.
Specify an AMT Provisioning and Discovery Account if any one of the following conditions applies:
- The AMT-based computer has never been
provisioned, and your manufacturer delivered the computer with a
customized MEBx password. (It is not admin.) When this is
the case, add an AMT Provisioning and Discovery Account named
admin and specify the password that was provided by the
manufacturer.
- The AMT-based computer has never been
provisioned, and your manufacturer delivered the computer with the
default MEBx password of admin, but you have configured the
MEBx password in the computer’s BIOS extensions. When this is the
case, add an AMT Provisioning and Discovery Account named
admin and specify the password that you configured in the
BIOS extensions.
- The AMT-based computer has been previously
provisioned by another AMT management solution, and the
provisioning information has been partially removed (either by that
management solution or by locally configuring the BIOS extensions).
When this is the case, and you want to discover or provision these
computers in-band by using Configuration Manager, add an AMT
Provisioning and Discovery Account named admin and specify
the password for the AMT Remote Admin Account that was configured
by the other management solution.
Do not specify an AMT Provisioning and Discovery Account in Configuration Manager if any one of the following conditions applies:
- The AMT-based computers that you want to
provision for out of band management with Configuration Manager
have never been provisioned and are supplied by the manufacture
without a customized MEBx Account. An AMT MEBx Account that is not
customized is named admin, and the password is admin.
Furthermore, you have not configured the MEBx Account with your own
choice of password by configuring the computer BIOS extensions.
- The AMT-based computer has been previously
provisioned by another AMT management solution, the provisioning
information has been fully removed (either by that management
solution or by locally configuring the BIOS extensions), and you
want to discover or provision these computers in-band.
- The AMT-based computer has been previously
provisioned by another AMT management solution, the provisioning
information has been fully removed or partially removed (either by
that management solution or by locally configuring the BIOS
extensions), and you want to provision these computers out of band
by specifying all the required information in the Import Computers
for Out of Band Management Wizard. For more information about
migrating AMT-based computers, see Decide How to Migrate
from an AMT-Based Management Solution to Out of Band Management in
Configuration Manager.
There is no technical limit to the number of AMT Provisioning and Discovery Accounts that you can configure. However, specifying many accounts might negatively impact network traffic during the discovery process because each account will be tried in turn until either the authentication is successful or there are no more accounts to try.
