The Configuration Items node in the Configuration Manager console appears under the Desired Configuration Management node. This node displays any desired configuration management configuration items that have been created, imported, or inherited from a parent site. For each configuration item, the following information is displayed:

You can use View, Add/Remove columns to add further information to this window.

Actions for the Configuration Items Home Page

The following actions are available on the Configuration Items home page:

Action Description

Import Configuration Data

Opens the Import Configuration Data Wizard that enables you to import configuration items and baselines from files.

New

Provides the following options:

  • Application Configuration Item: Opens the Create Application Configuration Item Wizard.

  • General Configuration Item: Opens the Create General Configuration Item Wizard.

  • Operating System Configuration Item: Opens the Create Operating System Configuration Item Wizard.

  • Folder: Opens the New Folder dialog box that enables you to create a folder to group configuration baselines together.

  • Search Folder: Opens the Search Folder Criteria dialog box that enables you to gather configuration baselines into a folder based on search criteria.

Give Feedback

Opens a Configuration Manager 2007 Web site where feedback can be given.

View

Provides the following view options:

  • Add/Remove columns: Specifies which columns display in the results pane. Select the column name from the Available columns list, and click Add to add the column to the Displayed Columns list. Select the column name from the Displayed Columns list, and click Remove to remove the column from the displayed columns. Click Restore Defaults to display the default columns. Click OK to save changes.

  • Export list: Exports the data in the results pane to a text or Unicode text file that is tab or comma-delimited.

  • Hide search bar: Specifies to hide the search bar located above the results pane.

  • Customize: Specifies which items are displayed in the Configuration Manager 2007 console window.

New Window from Here

Opens a new console window using the current node as the root node.

Refresh

Refreshes the display with the most current information.

Help

Opens the associated Help topic.

Selecting an existing configuration item causes the following additional actions to be displayed:

Action Description

Export Configuration Data

Enables you to export a configuration item to a file.

Duplicate

Creates a copy of the selected configuration baseline.

Create Child Configuration Item

Creates a new child configuration item from the selected configuration item.

Create New Collection

Provides the following options:

  • Compliant Systems – Opens the New Collection Wizard. The Wizard is prepopulated with a query to create a collection of computers that is compliant with the selected configuration baseline.

  • Non-Compliant Systems – Opens the New Collection Wizard. The Wizard is prepopulated with a query to create a collection of computers that is not compliant with the selected configuration baseline.

  • Application Not Detected - Opens the New Collection Wizard. The Wizard is prepopulated with a query to create a collection of computers on which the application specified in an application configuration item is not detected (applies only to application configuration items).

View Xml Definition

Displays the XML definition for the configuration item in a new window.

Manage Categories

Opens the Categories dialog box from where you can assign, modify, or remove a category for this configuration item and also create new categories and delete existing categories.

Move Items

Opens the Move Items dialog box that enables you to move the selected configuration item into a folder.

Cut

Moves the selected configuration item to the Clipboard.

Paste

Pastes a configuration item from the Clipboard into the currently selected folder.

Note
This option is only visible if you have used Cut to move a configuration item to the Clipboard.

Delete

Opens the Confirm Deletion dialog box that enables you to review the effects of the deletion before deleting the configuration item.

Refresh

Refreshes the display with the most current information.

Properties

Opens the Configuration Item Properties dialog box that enables you to review and change the properties of the selected configuration item.

Help

Opens the associated Help topic.
