About Inventory on Multi-Site Clients

Systems Management Server (SMS) version 2.0 allows clients to belong to more than one site. For example, an employee who travels frequently might use a portable computer and log on to the site that is geographically closest to his current location. When a client belongs to more than one site, SMS determines what to do if some sites enable inventory and others disable it, or if the schedules are not the same for all sites.

To schedule and report inventory from multi-site clients, SMS uses a principal site. A principal site is typically the first site that installs the SMS client software on the client. (The Systems Management Control Panel applet on 32-bit clients allows you or a user to change the principal site for a client. On 16-bit clients, you can modify the [Sites] section of the SMScfg.ini file.) A client follows the inventory schedule defined for its principal site. If inventory for the principal site is disabled, however, the client follows the schedule of the next inventory-enabled site listed in the registry key. If the schedule changes on the principal site or if a different site becomes the principal site, the schedule on the client changes, too.

Note    The respective inventory agents will not be removed from a multi-site client unless all the sites it belongs to disable those inventory agents.
