Collecting Software Inventory Overview

Systems Management Server (SMS) can extract software inventory data directly from files (such as .exe files), using the file header information, on clients. SMS can also inventory "unknown" files — files that do not have detailed information in their headers — which provides your site with a flexible, easy-to-maintain software inventory method. You can also have SMS collect copies of files that you specify.

To configure software inventory for a site, you use the Software Inventory Client Agent Properties dialog box in Site Settings. To view software inventory for a client, use Resource Explorer.
