Client Installation Configuration Overview

Client installation is the act of turning site resources into Systems Management Server (SMS) clients. SMS provides the following client installation methods:

Logon client installation
SMS commands are inserted in the logon scripts of SMS logon points. When a resource logs on to the logon point, the resource runs the logon script, turning the resource into a client.

Use this installation method for all clients that participate in a resource domain environment, except as noted in the next two sections.

Note   Logon points are supported on NTFS partitions only, not FAT.

Windows NT remote client installation
This installation method turns all servers that run Windows NT Server and are domain members into SMS clients. Either Resource Discovery or Network Discovery can initiate this method.

Use this installation method for Windows NT resources that lack an account that is a member of the local Administrator group.

Manual client installation
A user on a resource runs the SMSman.exe file, turning the resource into a client.

Use this installation method for any of the following:

Note   Clients are assigned to sites based on the subnets the clients are in. Each site claims certain subnets as its own; these are specified in the Boundaries tab of the Site Properties dialog box.
