Discovery Methods Configuration Overview

Before Systems Management Server (SMS) can manage a site, SMS site databases must be populated with resources and knowledge of your network. In SMS, resources are divided into classes. SMS provides the following discovery methods. If the site was installed using Express Setup, these discovery methods are enabled by default (except Network Discovery). If Custom Setup was used, none are enabled by default.

Network Discovery

Finds system-class resources and, optionally, the operating systems that the resources run.

Windows Networking Logon Discovery

Finds system-class resources that run Microsoft Windows-based operating systems when a user logs on to an SMS logon point.

Heartbeat Discovery

Periodically updates the SMS site database with fresh discovery data from resources discovered with the Windows Networking Logon Discovery method.

NetWare NDS Logon Discovery

Finds system-class resources on a NetWare NDS system when users log on to logon points.

NetWare Bindery Logon Discovery

Finds system-class resources on a NetWare Bindery system when users log on to logon points.

Site System Discovery for Windows NT Server

Finds site systems that run Windows NT Server and automatically makes them SMS clients.

Site System Discovery for NetWare Bindery

Finds site systems that run NetWare bindery and automatically makes them SMS clients.

Windows NT User Account Discovery

Finds Windows domain user accounts.

Windows NT User Group Discovery

Finds Windows domain user groups.
