To upgrade a managed mobile device client over the air Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager 2007 can send an upgrade package using software distribution to mobile devices. A platform-specific mobile device client deployment folder is required for each mobile device platform in the environment.
Prerequisites
Using Configuration Manager software distribution to upgrade the device management client requires the following:
- A mobile device deployment folder containing
platform specific files. For more information, see How to Create a Mobile
Device-Based Mobile Device Client Deployment Folder.
- A properly configured ClientSettings.ini
file. For more information, see How to Edit the
ClientSettings.ini File for Mobile Device Management.
Procedure
To distribute a mobile device client upgrade to mobile devices over the air requires the following steps:

In the Configuration Manager console, navigate System Center Configuration Manager / Site Database / Computer Management / Software Distribution / Packages.

Right-click Packages, navigate Distribute and then click Software to Devices. The Distribute Software to Devices Wizard opens. Click Next.

Select Create a new package and program. Click Next.

Fill out the appropriate package fields (Name, Version, etc.). Click Next.

Specify Always obtain files from a source directory or Create a compressed version of the source. The appropriate setting will depend upon your environment. For more information, see Source File Page.

Specify whether the source directory is located by Network Path (UNC name) or Local drive on site server.

Click Browse and navigate to the new folder created in step 1 above. Click OK. Click Next.

Specify the distribution point or points for the new package. Click Next.

Specify the Name, Comments, Download folder for the new program and where to run the command line.

To specify the Command line of the program, click Browse. The Open file dialog box opens.

For Files of type, select Executable (*.exe). Select DMInstaller_[platform type].exe. Click Open. Click Next.

Specify the device network connection type that must be present for the program to be run. For more information, see Program Properties Page. Click Next.

Using the Distribute Software to Devices Wizard, specify the properties of the advertisement to distribute the newly created package and program. Complete the wizard and then click Close.
The Configuration Manager 2007 mobile device client is advertised, distributed and upgraded on the mobile device. For more information about verifying mobile device client deployment, see How to Verify Mobile Device Client Installation or Upgrade.

Installation Files from Over the Air Upgrade
During an over the air upgrade the following files will be copied to the download folder of the mobile device:
- ClientSettings.ini
- Certificate files if any
- DmClientSetup.exe
- DmInstaller.exe
- Enroll.exe
The combined total file size is approximately .6 MB. If the mobile device client installation process is not successfully completed a cabinet file (.cab) may also remain on the mobile device.
