Client ping in Configuration Manager 2007 R2 client status reporting performs a number of checks to determine the status of client computers on your network. In addition to issuing a standard ping command to determine network connectivity, client ping also checks the state of the Configuration Manager 2007 client service and the BITS service. Results from client ping are stored in the Configuration Manager 2007 site database and can be viewed using the reports supplied with client status reporting. The following results can be returned by client ping:

Note
Client ping only pings computers that are marked as inactive. These are computers for which the Configuration Manager 2007 database does not contain discovery or inventory data.

Offline - No Name Resolution

These client computer names could not be resolved.

Offline - Not Pingable

These client computers were not on the network when the ping tool ran. They might be turned off or disconnected from the network.

Online - Access Denied

These client computers were found on the network, but the state of the client service and BITS service could not be determined.

Online - CCMExec Installed, Not Running

The Configuration Manager 2007 client service is installed on these computers, but it is not running.

Online - CCMExec Not Installed

These client computers are online and can be accessed, but the Configuration Manager 2007 client service is not installed.

Online - CCMExec Running, BITS Installed

These client computers are running the Configuration Manager 2007 client service and also have BITS installed.

Online - CCMExec Running, BITS not Installed

These client computers are running the Configuration Manager 2007 client service, but the BITS service is not installed.

Undetermined

Client status reporting was unable to determine the status of these computers.

Client ping runs sequentially on clients in your site according to a schedule that you define.

Use the following procedure to enable and configure client status reporting client ping.

Important
Client Ping is not supported when clients are managed on the Internet.  For more information about managing clients on the Internet, see the Overview of Internet-Based Client Management topic in the Configuration Manager 2007 documentation library.

To configure client ping

  1. From the Windows Start menu on the client status reporting host system, navigate to Microsoft Configuration Manager 2007 R2 Client Status Reporting, click Configure Client Status Reporting, and then click the Schedule tab.

    Important
    To configure client status reporting, you must open the Client Status Reporting dialog box using a Windows user account with administrator privileges on the client status reporting host system. On Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008 computers, right-click Configure Client Status Reporting in the Windows start menu, then click Run as administrator.
  2. Under Client ping settings, enable Ping inactive clients.

  3. Click the Schedule button to open the Schedule dialog box to specify how often client ping will run. Click OK to close the Schedule dialog box.

  4. Click Apply to save any changes.

  5. Click Run now to start client ping immediately if required.

  6. Click OK.
