Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager 2007 uses configuration packages to distribute configuration items to mobile device clients in the same way packages distribute content to computer clients. Like packages for computer clients, configuration packages use programs, distribution points, and advertisements to collections to distribute their content. For more information about packages, see About Packages.

Configuration packages are built automatically based upon settings selections made by the administrator using the Configuration Package wizard. Source locations are defined automatically when creating the configuration package.

Note
Mobile devices do not recognize configuration package access accounts restrictions. Mobile devices do not have domain accounts and therefore cannot be restricted by access accounts.

Configuration items generally represent a set of mobile device settings to be applied to the mobile device and can only be distributed by using Mobile Device Management configuration packages. For more information about configuration items, see About Configuration Items for Mobile Devices.
