The home page for the Desired Configuration Management node in Configuration Manager 2007 provides a snapshot of the compliance status of client computers that report up to the site. Compliance evaluation results are sent from client computers to their management point with state messages and status messages.

From the home page, you can perform the following actions:

To view a list of assigned configuration baselines that are reporting non-compliance, with a summary for each of the compliance evaluation results

  1. In the Configuration Manager console, navigate to System Center Configuration Manager / Site Database / Computer Management / Desired Configuration Management.

  2. Under the section Desired Configuration Compliance Summary, displayed on the left is a list of assigned configuration baselines. By default, these are filtered to display only the configuration baselines that are reporting out of compliance with the severity level of Error or Critical. The configuration baselines are further sorted in descending order for the highest number of non-compliance results. Scroll across to see reported values for the following columns:

    • Name: The specified name of the configuration baseline.

    • Severity: The severity level configured in the configuration item if non-compliance is reported or if the configuration item is not present on the client computer.

    • Assigned Count: The number of computers that have been assigned the configuration baseline.

    • Non-compliant Count: The number of computers that have reported back a non-compliance status with the selected baseline.

    • Compliance Count: The number of computers that have reported back a compliance status with the selected baseline.

    • Failure Count: The number of computers that have reported back a failure in evaluating their compliance status with the selected baseline.

    • Compliance Level (expressed as a number percentage): The number of computers that have reported a compliance status, with the selected baseline divided by the number of computers assigned the configuration baseline, expressed as a number percentage.

    • Compliance Level (expressed as a graphical percentage): The number of computers that have reported a compliance status, with the selected baseline divided by the number of computers assigned the configuration baseline, expressed as a bar chart.

To launch a report of the listed configuration baselines to view more detailed information about the non-compliant computers

  1. In the Configuration Manager console, navigate to System Center Configuration Manager / Site Database / Computer Management / Desired Configuration Management.

  2. Under the section Desired Configuration Compliance Summary, click the name of the configuration baseline that you want to drill into to see a more detailed report on the non-compliance information.

  3. If this is the first time you have launched a report from this home page, you will see the Report Options dialog box. Accept or specify the default reporting point, and optionally specify whether you want to open a new window for reports that are launched from this home page. Click OK.

  4. In the Summary Compliance by Configuration Baseline report, you can further drill down into the details by clicking next to the configuration baseline name to display the report Non-Compliance details for a configuration item on a computer.

  5. Close the reports to return to the Desired Configuration Management home page.

To view a graphical representation of the client computers that are reporting a non-compliance status, using a pie-chart format:

  1. In the Configuration Manager console, navigate to System Center Configuration Manager / Site Database / Computer Management / Desired Configuration Management.

  2. Under the section Desired Configuration Compliance Summary, on the right, a pie chart displays the compliance results for the selected configuration baselines on the left. When more than one configuration baseline is selected, the pie chart displays aggregate data for all the selected configuration baselines. The pie chart is divided into the following sections:

    • Compliant: The percentage of client computers that have reported a compliance status with the selected configuration baseline.

    • Not Compliant: The percentage of client computers that have reported a non-compliance status with the selected configuration baseline.

    • Failed: The percentage of client computers that have failed to return either a compliant or non-compliant status with the selected configuration baseline.

    • Unknown: The percentage of client computers that have been assigned the selected configuration baseline but have not returned compliance status information.

To filter the information shown by severity and category

  1. In the Configuration Manager console, navigate to System Center Configuration Manager / Site Database / Computer Management / Desired Configuration Management.

  2. Under the section Desired Configuration Compliance Summary, use the drop-down list Choose Minimum Severity to filter the configuration baselines displayed. The non-compliance severity setting is configured in each configuration item. It can be used if the configuration item is not present on client computers and also if it is present but fails the validation criteria. Possible values for Choose Minimum Severity are the following:

    • Information - no Windows event messages: The default. All configuration baselines are displayed. Use this option if you want to see all configuration baselines, including configuration baselines that are not assigned or that have full compliance reported back.

    • Error: The configuration baselines are displayed if any configuration item from them report a non-compliance status and the severity level for the configuration item is configured for Error.

    • Warning: The configuration baselines are displayed if any configuration item from them report a non-compliance status and the severity level for the configuration item is configured for Warning or Error.

    • Information: The configuration baselines are displayed if any configuration item from them report a non-compliance status and the severity level for the configuration item is configured for Warning, Error, or Information.

  3. Under the section Desired Configuration Compliance Summary, use the drop-down list Choose Category to filter the configuration baselines displayed according to their assigned categories.

To set the schedule to update the home page information and request an ad-hoc update of information

  1. In the Configuration Manager console, navigate to System Center Configuration Manager / Site Database / Computer Management / Desired Configuration Management.

  2. Click Schedule Home Page Summarization on the Actions pane, or select this option by right-clicking on the Desired Configuration Management node.

  3. In the Custom Schedule dialog box, specify the Duration values for how often you want the information to be updated in the home page. The information displayed is dependent on the schedule of the assigned configuration baselines, so setting a more frequent summarization schedule might not result in newer information being displayed.

  4. To request an ad-hoc update of information displayed from hardware inventory results, click Run Home Page Summarization. This sends a request to retrieve, process, and then display the latest information in the home page. This action is not the same as a Refresh, which redisplays the same information.

    Note
    To check when the information was last displayed, view the Last Updated information on the Desired Computer Configuration Compliance Summary bar.

To use the Links and Resources as useful shortcuts to relevant actions and information

  1. In the Configuration Manager console, navigate to System Center Configuration Manager / Site Database / Computer Management / Desired Configuration Management.

  2. Navigate to the section Links and Resources in the bottom portion of the home page.

  3. Under the section Navigation, click the links to take you to the related section of the tree in the Configuration Manager console.

  4. Under the section Web Reports, click any of the popularly used Web reports to provide more detailed information about the compliance evaluations of client computers.

    Note
    A full list of reports relating to desired configuration management can be found by navigating to System Center Configuration Manager / Site Database / Computer Management / Reporting / Reports. To easily locate the reports associated with desired configuration management, sort the list of reports by the Category named Desired Configuration Management.
  5. Under the section Resources, click the links that provide related information to the configuration and use of desired configuration management and Configuration Manager 2007.
