Unlike the other configurable discovery methods within Configuration Manager 2007, Heartbeat Discovery is already enabled with a standard Configuration Manager site installation. As a result, you need to configure only the schedule for how often clients send an updated data discovery record (DDR) to the management point.

To set the Heartbeat Discovery schedule, you must have Modify permissions for the Site Security object class or instance. For more information about security permissions, see Classes and Instances for Object Security in Configuration Manager.

Note
If client push installation is enabled on your Configuration Manager site, you should set this schedule interval to less than the client rediscovery interval period set for site maintenance. This will prevent the needless reinstallation of clients. The client rediscovery interval can be viewed by selecting Tasks on the Site Maintenance node, right-clicking Clear Install Flag, and then clicking Properties.

Although Heartbeat Discovery is enabled by default, if it becomes disabled accidentally, it can be re-enabled in the same manner as any other discovery method. For more information, see How to Enable a Discovery Method.

To configure the Heartbeat Discovery schedule

  1. In the Configuration Manager console, navigate to System Center Configuration Manager / Site Database / Site Management / <site name> / Site Settings / Discovery Methods.

  2. Right-click Heartbeat Discovery, and then click Properties.

  3. In the Heartbeat schedule group box, specify how often clients will create and send a heartbeat DDR to the management point.

  4. Click OK.
