Registering an alias in DNS for the out of band service point in Configuration Manager 2007 SP1 and later allows AMT-based computers to automatically provision for AMT out of band. (The client for Configuration Manager 2007 SP1 or later is not installed.)

Typically, AMT-based computers are configured in the BIOS extensions to use the name of ProvisionServer for the provisioning server. This name must resolve to the IP address of the site system server that has the out of band service point role. When this name is not already registered in DNS, an alias (CNAME) record in DNS is required.
Configuration Manager can automatically register the alias of ProvisionServer if your DNS servers support dynamic updates. (The record is created by the site server.) Alternatively, you can manually create an alias record, which would be appropriate if your DNS servers do not support dynamic updates or you are using an alternative name to ProvisionServer.

Use the following procedures to automatically register the alias of ProvisionServer in DNS or manually add the record to a Microsoft DNS server. For information about manually adding CNAME records for non-Microsoft DNS servers, refer to your DNS documentation.

To automatically register an alias of ProvisionServer in DNS

In the Configuration Manager console, navigate to System Center Configuration Manager / Site Database / Site Management / <site code> – <site name> / Site Settings / Component Configuration, right-click Out of Band Management, and then click Properties.

On the General tab, select Register ProvisionServer as an alias in DNS, and then click OK.
To manually register an alias in Microsoft DNS

In the DNS console, expand the Forward Lookup Zones folder for the server you want to work with.

Right-click the domain that contains the out of band service point, and then click New Alias (CNAME).

Type in ProvisionServer or your alternative name for the Alias name field.

In the Fully qualified domain name (FQDN) for target host field, type or browse to the fully qualified domain name of the site system server hosting the out of band service point.

Click OK.
