Hardware inventory is the process of gathering hardware-related information from current clients in a Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager 2007 site. The information gathered includes processor type, network card, amount of memory, and disk information. Configuration Manager 2007 stores this data in the site database, where you can use the information in queries to generate and view reports, or to build hardware-specific collections. For example, you could create a collection of all computers with a specific amount of RAM installed.

Client hardware inventory settings are configured in the Hardware Inventory Client Agent properties in the Configuration Manager console. To extend the default information collected by hardware inventory client agent, you must modify the configuration.mof and sms_def.mof files located on the primary site server computer.
