The ESI Symmetrix VMAX Adapter enables storage administrators to create, provision, and manage VMAX storage with ESI. This VMAX Adapter is based on the Solutions Enabler Storage Management Initiative - Specification (SMI-S) provider. This adapter:
Supports all VMAX storage systems that are supported in ESI
Replaces the EMC Symmetrix Adapter that was based on the Storage Pool Manager (SPM) from previous versions
Is installed by default with ESI
The VMAX Adapter has the following limitations:
Using FAST VP lists the limitations associated with FAST VP.
Managing metas lists the limitations associated with managing metas or composite LUNs.
The VMAX Adapter cannot provision storage on host systems that are provisioned with Virtualization Domains or with the Storage Pool Manager (SPM) from previous releases of the ESI VMAX Adapter.
You cannot create, view, or remove snapshot LUNs for VMAX systems in this release. However, future ESI releases will support snapshots for VMAX.
Prerequisites
To use the VMAX Adapter to provision storage, you must do the following:
Download and install the latest version of SMI-S that is available from the EMC SMI-S Provider Software Downloads page on EMC Online Support.
Install and run SMI-S on a management server that is separate from all ESI hosts and storage systems. The VMAX Adapter cannot provision storage on a server that is running SMI-S.
