Configuration Database

The configuration database for Microsoft® Provisioning Framework (MPF) contains three categories of data:

This database can be maintained using either Configuration Database WMI Provider or Provisioning Manager.

Database changes are propagated immediately to the remaining servers in the MPF installation. Behind the scenes, Provisioning Manager calls the Configuration Database WMI Provider to publish the update. The provider notifies every remote server that there has been a change. Each server then checks for the change and immediately updates its state. If a server is down, the change takes effect when that server is operational again.

Access to the database is governed by the system configuration and security policies in effect. By default, only SQL administrators and members of the MPFAdmins group  are allowed to update the database and view sensitive data. For domain deployments, domain users have execute privileges for a subset of the stored procedures.

To accelerate startup and enable MPF to continue processing even if the configuration database is unreachable, MPF caches configuration data in the Windows® registry.
