MOSDAL Introduction and Overview

What is MOSDAL?

The Microsoft Online Services Diagnostics and Logging (MOSDAL) Support Toolkit is built from the ground up, borrowing concepts from MPS. It performs network diagnostics and collects system configuration, network configuration, and logging information for service-based products. The logs generated by the tool provide data that assists users with troubleshooting configuration, network, installation, and other service-related issues. MOSDAL collects log files, registry keys, and configuration settings that would normally use separate tools, manual methods, and lots of time to collect the data.

Although designed specifically to assist Microsoft® Online Services (BPOS-S and Office 365) users with troubleshooting customer issues, the tool is available for anyone needing log files to troubleshoot connectivity or network issues. MOSDAL also collects system-specific information about currently installed device, drivers, services, hotfixes, and applications. MOSDAL can be run by anyone with an administrator account or a non-administrator account, but must be run on the computer used by the individual having issues. MOSDAL cannot be run remotely.

NOTE: The current version of MOSDAL is 3.0. MOSDAL 3.0 continues to support Microsoft® Online Services (BPOS-S), offering the same types of data collection and network diagnostics for Microsoft® Office 365 and Microsoft® Office Live Meeting.

MOSDAL collects information about the current network configuration of the computer, such as the computer’s IP address, subnet mask, default gateway, DNS servers, ARP tables, and static routes. Detailed information on active connections and network interfaces is also collected. Diagnostics on the computer’s network connections verify whether the connections are configured correctly for accessing Microsoft® Online Services (BPOS-S and Office 365). Finally, copies of the computer’s host files are captured.

MOSDAL collects information about the configuration of the computer in the context of the current user. Individuals sharing workstations or computers need to ensure that the data collected reflects their issues when logged on.

Specific information collected by MOSDAL includes:

Data on the following applications is collected by MOSDAL:

For each of the listed applications above, MOSDAL verifies whether the application is installed, collects logs, the version number of certain program files and appropriate files, and the relevant registry keys. Some additional information, which varies by application, is also captured.

NOTE: MOSDAL does not collect data for all applications on your system.

Improvements included with MOSDAL 3.0 include:
