The Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 Management Pack for System Center Operations Manager includes a performance data collection engine that is used to query performance counter objects on computers running Exchange 2010. For this Operations Manager rule, data is collected by using the performance counter specified in the Details table.

To review the value of the performance counter that generated this alert, in Operations Manager, double-click this alert, and then click the General tab. Review the description of the alert that includes the variables specific to your environment.

Rule Name

The Exchange information store: RPC Averaged Latency - sustained for 5 minutes - Yellow (>50 msec).

Explanation

This Error event occurs when the server is experiencing a heavy load. When RPC latencies are in this range, users experience decreased performance. An increase in latency can have either of the following causes:

  • An increase in RPC load

  • A bottleneck in one or more server resources; a bottleneck may have any of the following causes:

    • A high RPC load (or any other load on the server)

    • A hardware malfunction

    • A configuration error

User Action

To resolve this problem, do one or more of the following:

  • To determine whether certain protocols are causing overall RPC latencies, monitor the MSExchangeIS Client (*)\RPC Average Latency performance counter to separate latencies based on client protocol.

  • Stop and restart the Exchange Information Store service from the Windows Services snap-in.

  • Run the Chkdsk utility. If Chkdsk finds severe problems, replace the affected hard disk.

  • Look for periodic tasks that might decrease the performance of the server. Such tasks include assistants and scheduled activities.
