The Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 Management Pack for System Center Operations Manager monitors the Windows Application log on computers running Exchange 2010 and generates this alert when the events specified in the following Details table are logged.

Rule Name

Outlook Web App failed to initialize. A referenced theme folder is missing. Review MSExchangeOWA event 18 for the cause.


This Error event indicates that Microsoft Office Outlook Web App did not initialize because the Outlook Web App themes folder referenced in the event description does not exist. The folder contains subfolders for each themes folder installed on the computer that is running the Client Access server role. Each subfolder contains images and cascading style sheets that are used to customize the appearance of Outlook Web App for your organization. The default location of the themes folder is C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\ClientAccess\Owa\<version>\.

User Action

To resolve the error, follow these steps:

  • Replace the themes folder and the default subfolders with the files and folders that are located on the Exchange Server 2010 DVD. By default, those files and folders are located in the \Setup\ServerRoles\ClientAccess\owa\<version>\ folder of the Exchange 2010 DVD.

  • If a custom Outlook Web App theme is used, re-create all the files that are associated with the custom theme.

  • Contact a Microsoft Support professional to resolve this issue. To contact a Microsoft Support professional, visit the Exchange Server Solutions Center. In the navigation pane, click Assisted Support Options and use one of the assisted support options to contact a Microsoft Support professional. Because your organization may have a specific procedure for directly contacting Microsoft Technical Support, be sure to review your organization's guidelines first.
