One or more Language Interface Packs (LIPs) are available on the Windows® 7 LIP CD-ROM. However, not all LIPs are available for Windows 7 at Release-to-Manufacturing (RTM). Microsoft will release new LIPs for Windows 7 as they become available.

Corporations and end users can download LIPs from the Microsoft.com download center and add them to any genuine copy of Windows that has the supported parent language installed. For more information, see Local Language Program.

LIPs must be installed to the operating system that they support. Windows 7 LIPs cannot be used on Windows Vista®; similarly, Windows Vista LIPs cannot be used on Windows 7.

Important:

Not all LIPs are currently available for Windows 7. For information about the latest available LIPs, see the Local Language Program.

OEMs and system builders who have accepted the Microsoft Software License Terms can get the LIPs from the OEM and system builder download centers.

Windows 7 LIPs can be installed on any edition of Windows 7 provided a valid parent language pack is already installed. For example, the Basque LIP can be installed only if the Spanish (es-ES) or French (fr-FR) language pack is already installed. If you install a LIP to an offline Windows image, you must verify that the supported parent language pack is installed to the Windows image to which you intend to install the LIP. For a list of the supported parent languages, see Understanding Language Packs. If you use the LPKSetup.exe tool or double-click the LIP.mlc file, then the program will automatically detect whether you have the correct parent languages installed. If the parent language is not installed, then installation will not continue and you will be prompted to install the parent language pack.

Use one of the following procedures to install LIPs:

To install a LIP in an unattended Windows installation

You can install LIPs offline using an answer file the same way you add a Language Pack. For more information, see Add and Remove Language Packs Offline.

You can also install a LIP online by using the LPKSetup tool and following the procedures in Add a Language Pack Online. Alternately, you can add a FirstLogonCommand to your answer file in the Microsoft-Windows-Shell-Setup component and install a LIP when the settings in the answer file are applied the first time Windows boots. The FirstLogonCommand must run in an account that has administrator privileges.

The following example shows what the FirstLogonCommand should look like in your answer file.

<FirstLogonCommands>
   <SynchronousCommand wcm:action="add">
	<CommandLine>lpksetup.exe /i hi-IN /r /s /p %SYSTEMDRIVE%\MyLIPs\hi-IN</CommandLine>
	<Description>Install Hindi (India)</Description>
	<Order>1</Order>
   </SynchronousCommand>
</FirstLogonCommands>
