The Volume Activation Management Tool (VAMT) can be used to import and export product-activation data into a Computer Information List (CIL) file commonly used in proxy activation scenarios.

Warning

Editing a CIL file using an application other than VAMT can corrupt the CIL file and is not supported.

Import VAMT Data

Use the Import List dialog box to select a Computer Information List (CIL) file to import product-activation data into VAMT. Choose the Import List menu from the context-sensitive Actions menu or from the Action menu on the top menu bar, when the focus is on a node. The CIL file is an XML file that stores computer and product-activation data. A CIL file is normally imported when the VAMT is being used as a proxy to submit installation IDs (IIDs) to Microsoft and import the resulting confirmation IDs (CIDs) returned from Microsoft. Export VAMT Data

Use the Save List As dialog box to specify a file name, path, and the non-Personally Identifiable Information (non-PII) content option when exporting VAMT data to a Computer Information List (CIL) file. Choose the Save List As menu from the context-sensitive Actions menu or from the Action menu on the top menu bar, when the focus is on a node. This command is used to export product information from a non-Internet-connected VAMT host computer in the first step of proxy activation using multiple VAMT hosts.

Selecting the Export only Installation ID and Product ID check box ensures that the export contains only the licensing information required for the proxy web service to obtain CIDs from Microsoft. No PII is contained in the exported CIL file when this selection is checked.

Note

When excluding sensitive data during export, save two versions of the CIL—a full CIL with sensitive data and a second without sensitive data, as described in Scenario 2: MAK proxy activation. VAMT uses certain PII to apply the correct CID to products.
