The System Center Updates Publisher rules are created from within the Create Update Wizard, Modify Update Wizard, or Manage Rules dialog box. Each rule configured in the software update definition is verified with what is found on computers to determine whether the update is needed, applicable, or installed. The rules are categorized as a basic or MSI (Windows Installer) rule and have one or more rule types. Basic rules verify whether scanned computers have a specific file, registry key value, architecture type, Windows version, and so on. Windows Installer rules verify whether a specific software update, product, component, or feature is installed on a computer. The Not rule setting can be enabled on any of the rules, reversing the logical result of the rule. The following section describes basic and MSI rules and the rule types within each.
