ReferralId specifies the identity of OEMs that are participating in the Windows® Anytime Upgrade reward program. Referral payments are used to reward the party that conducts a promotional activity that results in the purchase and successful activation of a digital license.

Important
This setting has been removed in Windows® 8. This setting was deprecated in Windows® 7.This information is for reference only.

OEMs enter the referral ID for all computers that are enabled for Windows Anytime Update.

OEMs that participate in the Windows Anytime Upgrade reward program are assigned a six-digit referral ID by the Referral Tracking System (RTS), after the OEM signs a Windows Anytime Upgrade Referral Agreement.

The referral ID and the partial Product Identifier (PID) are included in the information that is passed from Windows® 7 to the activation server during activation. The PID provides a unique digital fingerprint to a Microsoft product license. This digital fingerprint is used to manage and track support effectively and to detect and deter product piracy. Because only the first six digits are used, rather than the complete 20-digit value, only a partial PID is needed.

The RTS uses the referral ID to identify the OEM that is participating in the Windows Anytime Upgrade program. The RTS uses the associated partial PID to determine the product for the qualifying reward.
