Synchronization for the Microsoft Updates catalog used for Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003 clients in the Configuration Manager 2007 hierarchy is performed by running an advertisement that initiates the synchronization process.

Important
Before running synchronization for the Microsoft Update catalog, you must upgrade or install the Configuration Manager 2007 Inventory Tool for Microsoft Updates on the site server. When upgrading the site server from SMS 2003 to Configuration Manager 2007, Setup automatically initiates the Inventory Tool for Microsoft Updates upgrade if it detects a previous version of the tool.

Use the following procedure to initiate a synchronization of a software update catalog.

To synchronize the Microsoft Updates catalog

  1. In the Configuration Manager console, navigate to System Center Configuration Manager / Site Database / Computer Management / Software Distribution / Advertisements.

  2. Right-click Microsoft Updates Tool Sync, and then click Re-run Advertisement. The synchronization host downloads the most recent software updates catalog and copies it to all distribution points where it will be available to SMS 2003 clients. If no changes have been made to the catalog, the synchronization host will not overwrite the existing catalog.

    Note
By default, clients will update the software update catalog and perform the inventory scan every 7 days. For more information about how to initiate this process manually, see How to Download the Latest Software Updates Catalog on SMS 2003 Clients.
