The following checklist for Configuration Manager 2007 software updates provides the steps necessary to learn about the software updates concepts, verify the prerequisites for software updates, plan for software updates depending on your environment, and prepare the software updates dependencies.
Step | More Information | ||
---|---|---|---|
Review the Configuration Manager 2007 software updates concepts. |
Review the software updates prerequisites, and then install any software update dependencies or make any required changes. |
Review the planning information about creating a test environment for software updates. |
If the site server has been, or will be, upgraded from Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003, review the planning information to get important information about the upgrade process and what needs to be done to deploy software updates to both Configuration Manager and SMS 2003 client computers. |
Determine what computer will become a site system server with the acting software update point site system role, what computer will become a site system server with an acting Internet-based software update point (if needed), and whether the software update point will be configured as a Network Load Balancing (NLB) cluster. |
Plan for the software update point installation. There are several dependent components that are required by the software update point, such as Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) 3.0. Depending on whether the site server is in native mode or mixed mode will determine the additional configuration requirements, such as configuring specific virtual directories in Internet Information Services (IIS) to be configured for Secure Sockets Layer (SSL).

Planning for the Software Update Point Installation For details about configuring the software update point installation in a mixed mode or native mode site, see: |
Review the software updates server settings for information about the options available when setting up the software update point, information about maintenance windows, and the settings that can be configured for each software update. |
Review the software updates client settings for information about the Software Updates Client Agent, Computer Client Agent settings that are relevant to software updates, and the settings configured from the Configuration Manager Properties on client computers. |
Review the planning information for deploying software updates. |
Create and configure a reporting point site system role to enable reporting for software updates. |
If Network Access Protection (NAP) evaluation will be enabled on software updates at the site, several configuration steps must be performed prior to configuring the software updates. Until NAP is configured on a site, the NAP evaluation option is not available on software updates. |

Create and configure distribution points for software update deployments. By default, the site server is configured as a standard distribution point. It is recommended that BITS be enabled on the distribution points for software updates. If Internet-based client computers are in the hierarchy, the distribution point must be configured to allow connections from them. |
