Topic last updated—January 2008

By default, in new installations of Configuration Manager 2007, Asset Intelligence information collection is not enabled. To enable the Asset Intelligence feature, at least one of the required hardware inventory reporting classes that Asset Intelligence reports rely on must be enabled.

Note
In Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager 2007, the Asset Management report category was renamed Asset Intelligence. When upgrading from SMS 2003 SP3 to Configuration Manager 2007, the existing Asset Management reports are deleted and Asset Intelligence reports are created. As a result, any previous modifications made to the standard SMS 2003 SP3 Asset Management reports are lost.

When a Systems Management Server 2003 SP3 site with the Asset Intelligence feature already installed and enabled is upgraded to Configuration Manager 2007, Asset Intelligence data collection will remain enabled. If additional hardware inventory reporting classes must be enabled, the procedures in this topic can be used in Configuration Manager 2007 or Configuration Manager 2007 SP1.

Note
To collect the inventory data required for Asset Intelligence reports, the hardware inventory client agent must be enabled. For information about enabling the hardware inventory client agent, see How to Configure Hardware Inventory for a Site

To enable Asset Intelligence in Configuration Manager 2007 sites, the SMS_def.mof hardware inventory reporting file must be manually edited to enable the required hardware inventory reporting classes that Asset Intelligence reports rely on. For more information about modifying the SMS_def.mof file, see How to Extend Hardware Inventory Using the SMS_def.mof File.

To enable Asset Intelligence in Configuration Manager 2007 SP1 sites, the Asset Intelligence Reporting Class Settings dialog box can be used to enable the required hardware inventory reporting classes that Asset Intelligence reports rely on.

To enable the Asset Intelligence feature in Configuration Manager 2007

  1. On the Configuration Manager 2007 primary site server computer, navigate to the <ConfigMgr installation directory> \ Inboxes \ clifiles.src \ hinv directory.

  2. Using Notepad.exe, open the SMS_def.mof file and make any necessary changes. To enable a hardware inventory reporting class, change the class reporting qualifier from False to True.

For a list of hardware inventory classes that Asset Intelligence reports depend on, see Hardware Inventory Reporting Classes Required for Asset Intelligence Reports.

  3. Close the SMS_def.mof file and save changes.

    Note
Asset Intelligence reports that depend on the hardware inventory classes enabled using this procedure will not display data until clients have performed hardware inventory using the new hardware inventory reporting policy based on the contents of the updated SMS_def.mof hardware inventory file.

To enable the Asset Intelligence feature in Configuration Manager 2007 SP1

  1. In the Configuration Manager 2007 SP1 console, navigate to System Center Configuration Manager / Site Database (<site code> - <site name>) / Computer Management / Asset Intelligence.

  2. Right-click Asset Intelligence, and click Edit Asset Intelligence Reporting Class Settings.

    Note
If the Configuration Manager console action pane is displayed while Asset Intelligence is selected in the console, the Asset Intelligence Reporting Class Settings dialog box can also be started by clicking Edit Asset Intelligence Reporting Class Settings in the action pane.
  3. To enable Asset Intelligence reporting, enable at least one reporting class from the available Asset Intelligence reporting classes displayed and click OK. After clicking OK, the selected hardware inventory reporting classes will be automatically enabled in the SMS_def.mof hardware inventory reporting file stored in the <ConfigMgr installation directory> \ Inboxes \ clifiles.src \ hinv directory on the primary site server computer.

For a list of hardware inventory classes that Asset Intelligence reports depend on, see Hardware Inventory Reporting Classes Required for Asset Intelligence Reports.

    Note
Asset Intelligence reports that depend on the hardware inventory classes enabled using this procedure will not display data until clients have performed hardware inventory using the new hardware inventory reporting policy based on the contents of the updated SMS_def.mof hardware inventory file.
