A Configuration Manager 2007 site consists of various site systems and clients. Each site has one site system that is the site server. The site server monitors and manages the site. Each site has one site system that is the Configuration Manager 2007 site database server, and each site can have at least one site system that is a management point. The management point is the site system that allows the site server and the site's clients to communicate.

In addition to these site systems, a site can have any number of additional site systems that perform different roles in the site. For example, to distribute software, a site must have at least one distribution point. Configuration Manager 2007 supports site systems that are set up either on the same computer as the site server or on a separate computer.

The site server and any of the other site systems can fail and cause a loss of the services they regularly provide. If multiple site systems are installed on the same computer, and that computer fails, all services regularly provided by those site systems are no longer available.

Because each site system in the site provides different functionality, the impact of a failure on the site differs, depending on the role of the site system that failed. The following table contains information that can help you evaluate the impact of failure in your site.

If the Configuration Manager 2007 client already has a policy assignment with new policies and if the management point has cached the policy body, the client can make a policy body request and receive the policy body reply; however, no new policy assignments requests can be serviced.

Clients can run programs only if they have already been detected, and the associated source files are already cached locally at the client.

Although new advertisements can be created, the clients do not receive them until a management point is online again.

Clients still collect inventory, software metering, and status information and store them locally until the management point is available.
