Configuration categories in Configuration Manager 2007 are optional properties for a configuration item or configuration baseline. They are designed to help improve searching and filtering when you have a large number of configuration items and configuration baselines.

Deleting a configuration category that is being used by configuration items or configuration baselines will automatically deselect the configuration category from those configuration items and configuration baselines before deleting the configuration categories.

There are three ways to delete configuration categories:

  1. Using the action Manage Categories.

  2. In the General tab of the configuration baseline properties or the configuration item properties.

  3. In the wizards used to create a configuration item or a configuration baseline.

    Caution
Configuration categories are shared between configuration baselines and configuration items, so deleting a configuration category in the Configuration Items node will result in it no longer being available to either configuration items or configuration baselines.

1. To delete configuration categories using the Manage Categories action

  1. In the Configuration Manager console, navigate to System Center Configuration Manager / Site Database / Computer Management / Desired Configuration Management.

  2. On the Action pane for either the Configuration Baselines node or the Configuration Items node, click Manage Categories.

  3. In the Categories dialog box, under Available categories, select a category to delete and then click Delete. If configuration baselines or configuration items are currently assigned to the configuration category, you will be warned and prompted to continue.

  4. Repeat step 3 for each configuration category you want to delete.

  5. Click OK.

2. To delete configuration categories in the wizards

  1. In the Identification page of the wizard to create a new configuration baseline or create a new configuration item, click Categories to display the Categories dialog box.

  2. Under Available categories, select a category to delete and click Delete. If configuration baselines or configuration items are currently assigned to the configuration category, you will be warned and prompted to continue.

  3. Repeat step 2 for each configuration category you want to delete.

  4. Click OK.

3. To delete configuration categories when editing the properties of a configuration baseline or configuration item

  1. In the Configuration Manager console, navigate to System Center Configuration Manager / Site Database / Computer Management / Desired Configuration Management.
