If you determine that you can upgrade an existing Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003 primary site directly to Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager 2007, you can perform an in-place upgrade. When you deploy Configuration Manager 2007 using the in-place upgrade method, the site server and its site systems do not change their site server roles. Also, existing clients do not change their site assignments when the site is upgraded.

In some scenarios, it is supported to upgrade a site from evaluation version software. For example, you cannot run Configuration Manager 2007 Setup to upgrade an existing SMS 2003 Service Pack 3 site running the evaluation version software, but you can upgrade SMS 2003 Service Pack 3 to the Configuration Manager 2007 SP1 evaluation version. For more information, see the upgrade paths section of the applicable Configuration Manager Supported Configurations.

Important
SMS 2003 primary sites cannot be managed by a Configuration Manager console installed on a Configuration Manager primary site server. If the site to be upgraded is a parent site to one or more SMS 2003 primary sites, ensure that you have installed a remote SMS 2003 Administrator console to manage those sites.

To perform an in-place upgrade to Configuration Manager 2007

  1. Before running Configuration Manager Setup to upgrade a site, ensure that you have properly prepared your computing environment to install Configuration Manager and have reviewed the Configuration Manager Upgrade Checklist. For more information about Configuration Manager prerequisites and the Configuration Manager Upgrade Checklist, see Prerequisites for Installing Configuration Manager and Configuration Manager 2007 Upgrade Checklist.

  2. Select Configuration Manager 2007 from the autorun screen, or start Setup.exe from the Configuration Manager installation media or from a copy of the installation media located on a network share or other storage media to start the Configuration Manager Setup Wizard.

  3. Click Next on the Welcome page.

  4. On the Setup Options page, select the Upgrade existing SMS 2003 or Configuration Manager installation option.

  5. On the Microsoft Software License Terms page, click I accept these terms and then click Next.

  6. On the Customer Experience Improvement Program page, you must choose a participation selection.

  7. On the Updated Prerequisite Components page, select the appropriate option for obtaining client prerequisite component files. Files can either be downloaded as part of Setup, an alternate location where the client prerequisite component files have already been downloaded to can be used.

  8. On the Updated Prerequisite Component Path page, specify the path to store client prerequisite component files downloaded during Setup or the path to the alternate location where client prerequisite component files have previously been downloaded to.

    Note
The Setup command line option Setup /download <path to files> can be used to download client prerequisite component files without running the complete Configuration Manager Setup wizard.
  9. On the Configuration Manager Product Key page, you must enter a valid product key.

  10. On the Installation Summary page, review the summary details for the site installation before continuing. To make changes to any details, click Previous until you return to the page in the wizard where you set the detail. After making any necessary changes, return to the Summary page.

  11. When prerequisite checking has completed, review any messages in the results pane of the Installation Prerequisite Check page to verify that all prerequisites have been met for installation to continue. If no prerequisite errors are found, you can click Begin Install to begin the upgrade process. If prerequisite errors are found, you can review the ConfigMgrPrereq.log file located in the root of the system drive for more information about how to resolve any issues found. When all discovered prerequisite check failures have been resolved, return to the Prerequisite Check page and re-run the setup prerequisites check.

    Important
Configuration Manager Setup cannot continue until all prerequisite checks have completed with no errors.
  12. Review the installation steps on the Installation Status to verify the actions taken and their status as Configuration Manager is installing.
