This topic describes the operating systems and disk configurations that support the capture, creation, and deployment of operating system images by using Configuration Manager 2007.
Supported Operating Systems
All operating systems listed as supported client operating systems under Configuration Manager 2007 Supported Configurations are supported for Operating System Deployment with the following exceptions:
- Clients that use the mobile device client.
For more information, see Configuration Manager
2007 Supported Configurations.
- Windows XP Embedded
- Windows Storage Server 2003
- Windows Storage Server 2008
- IA-64-based architecture computers
- Windows 7
- Windows Server 2008 R2
Important |
---|
Configuration Manager 2007 SP2 adds operating system deployment support for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2. Configuration Manager 2007 SP2 does not support operating system deployment for Windows Vista with no service pack installed. Configuration Manager 2007 SP2 supports operating system deployment for Windows Vista SP1 and later. |
The following operating systems do not support the “Apply operating system from an original installation source” option in the Apply Operating System task sequence action. These operating systems must be captured by using a reference computer before being deployed to the target computer:
- Windows Embedded for Point of Service 1.0
- Windows Embedded for Point of Service 1.1
- Windows Embedded Standard 2009
- Windows Embedded POSReady 2009
- Windows Fundamentals for Legacy PCs
- Windows XP Tablet PC
Supported Disk Configurations
The hard disk configuration combinations on the reference and target computers that are supported for use with Configuration Manager 2007 operating system deployment are shown in the following table.
Reference Hard Disk Configuration | Target Hard Disk Configuration |
---|---|
Basic Disk |

Configuration Manager 2007 supports capturing an operating system image only from computers configured with simple volumes. There is no support for the following hard disk configurations:
- Spanned volumes
- Striped volumes (RAID 0)
- Mirrored volumes (RAID 1)
- Parity volumes (RAID 5)
A hard disk configuration on the reference and target computers that is also not supported for use with Configuration Manager 2007 operating system deployment is shown in the following table.
