The schema is enabled for updates by default on Windows Server 2003 domains. For Windows 2000 Server domains, you must manually enable updates on the schema master for the Active Directory forest.

Enabling Schema Modifications for Windows 2000 Server Domains Using the Active Directory Schema MMC Snap-In

To enable schema modifications for Windows 2000 Server domains using the Active Directory Schema MMC snap-in

  1. At a command prompt, type regsvr32 schmmgmt.dll to register the schema snap-in. A success dialog box is displayed if the schema snap-in is registered successfully.

  2. On the taskbar, click the Start button, and then click Run.

  3. Type mmc, and then click OK.

  4. On the File menu, click Add/Remove Snap-in.

  5. Click Add.

  6. Under Snap-in, select Active Directory Schema, and then click Add.

  7. Click Close.

  8. Click OK.

  9. In the console tree, right-click Active Directory Schema, and then select Operations Master.

  10. Select the Schema may be modified on this Domain Controller check box, and then click OK.

  11. On the File menu, click Exit.

  12. Click No when prompted to save changes to the console.

Enabling Schema Modifications for Windows 2000 Server Domains Using the Registry Editor

Enabling schema modifications for Windows 2000 Server domains can also be done by editing the registry on the schema master domain controller computer for Windows 2000 Server domains. This procedure should only be performed on a domain controller that is running Windows 2000 Server and also holds the schema master role.

To perform this procedure, you must be a member of the Domain Admins group or the Enterprise Admins group in Active Directory, or you must have been delegated the appropriate authority.

Caution
Incorrectly editing the registry may severely damage your system. Before making changes to the registry, you should back up any valued data on the computer. You can also use the Last Known Good Configuration startup option if you encounter problems after manual changes have been applied.

To enable schema modifications for Windows 2000 Server domains using the Registry Editor

  1. Open the Registry Editor.

  2. In the Registry Editor, navigate to the Parameters registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Services/NTDS/Parameters

  3. On the Edit menu, click New, and then click DWORD Value.

  4. Type Schema Update Allowed, and then press ENTER.

  5. Double-click the Schema Update Allowed registry key that you just created, and in Value data, type 1 to enable schema changes.

  6. Close the Registry Editor.
