The Prerequisite Component Update Checker is started during Configuration Manager 2007 Setup to ensure that the latest external component files required for Configuration Manager 2007 client installation are available during Configuration Manager 2007 Setup.

When using the Configuration Manager 2007 Setup Wizard to install new Configuration Manager 2007 sites or to upgrade existing Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003 sites to Configuration Manager 2007, the Prerequisite Component Update Checker is started automatically. In some cases, such as when the planned site system computer does not have Internet access, the Prerequisite Component Update Checker must be started on a different computer with Internet access.

To start the Prerequisite Component Update Checker to download updated client installation prerequisite components, use the Setup command-line option of Setup /download <path>. When downloading prerequisite update files from a different computer, ensure that the download path specified will be accessible to planned site system computers when the Setup Wizard is run and that an alternate path is used to obtain client prerequisite component files.

Important
If you have a custom or manually authenticated firewall that prevents downloading the client component files, you must download the files from a different computer without those restrictions and copy the client component prerequisite files to the alternate path specified during Configuration Manager Setup.

Prerequisite Component Download Options

When the Prerequisite Component Update Checker is started during Configuration Manager Setup, you are prompted to either check for new component updates using the Internet or specify that the updates have already been downloaded and specify the alternate path to the downloaded files.

If the computer that Setup is being run on is connected to the Internet, Setup can check for updated prerequisite components and download them automatically to a path you specify.

If the computer that Setup is being run on is not connected to the Internet or if you have recently downloaded the component updates to an alternate path, you can specify the alternate path to the downloaded files location.

After downloading updated prerequisite component files, you can use the same alternate path to install multiple sites. When installing sites, always verify that the alternate path contains the most recent updates.

Important
To ensure the highest level of functionality and compatibility, you should always download the latest available components before running Configuration Manager Setup.
