Several features in Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager 2007 have home pages that allow you to view various types of information, such as the most active advertisements over a specified time period and a summary of the advertisement status on the software distribution home page. To display this type of data, Configuration Manager 2007 must summarize the data available in the site system database. Summarization happens on a configurable schedule. Decreasing the interval makes summarization happen more frequently but increases the load on the site database server. You can also force summarization to occur at any time.

Summarization is different than refreshing the home page. When you refresh the home page, Configuration Manager 2007 takes all the currently summarized data and displays it. The Last Updated date on the home page reflects the last time summarization completed successfully. Some data summarization tasks happen in seconds, but other tasks can take several minutes. Even if you refresh the screen immediately after forcing summarization, you might not see all the updated data you expect to see. There is no confirmation or notification that summarization is complete. If there are multiple console sessions running, one administrator might force a summarization and the administrator at a different session would see the new summarization data the next time the screen is refreshed.
