Use the Distribution Points tab in the Configuration Manager 2007 Software Distribution <Advertisement Name> Properties dialog box to specify how to deliver and run the content for the specific advertisement selected, depending on the type of boundary to which the client computer is connected.

Important
Selecting the Download content from distribution point and run locally option is strongly recommended for greatest security. When this option is selected, the package is hashed so that Configuration Manager 2007 can ensure package integrity. When the Run program from distribution point option is selected, the package hash is not verified prior to running the specified program. Therefore, package integrity cannot be ensured as it is possible for users with administrative rights to alter or tamper with package contents.

The Distribution Points tab contains the following elements:

When a client is connected within a fast (LAN) network boundary

Specifies the options available when the client is within a fast network boundary. The following options are available:
  • Run program from distribution point. Specifies whether an advertised program is run directly from a distribution point when the client is connected within a fast (LAN) network boundary.

  • Download content from distribution point and run locally. Specifies whether an advertised program is downloaded to the client computer before Configuration Manager 2007 attempts to run the program when connected within a fast (LAN) network boundary.

If the distribution point supports Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS), you can use this setting to ensure a fault tolerant download of the advertised program. In the event of interruption, BITS resumes the download the next time the computer connects to the network so this will not cause a problem. If you are not using a BITS-enabled distribution point and the computer disconnects from the network, the download fails.

When a client is connected within a slow or unreliable network boundary

Specifies the options available when the client is within a slow or unreliable network boundary. The following options are available:
  • Do not run program. Specifies whether a program should not be run when a client is connected within a slow or unreliable network boundary.

  • Download content from distribution point and run locally. Specifies whether an advertised program is downloaded to the client computer before Configuration Manager 2007 attempts to run the program when connected within slow or unreliable network boundary.

If the distribution point supports Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS), you can use this setting to ensure a fault tolerant download of the advertised program. If you are not using a BITS-enabled distribution point and the computer disconnects from the network, the download fails.

    Note
This setting is also used by clients who are not in any boundaries for the site.
  • Run program from distribution point. This option is unavailable when a client is connected within a slow or unreliable network boundary.

Allow clients to fallback to unprotected distribution points when the content is not available on the protected distribution point

Specifies whether Configuration Manager 2007 will permit a client to use an unprotected distribution point if content is not immediately available on its protected distribution point, or if it forces a client to use the protected local distribution point if it is within the boundaries for that point. This option is selected by default..If this checkbox is selected, a client will use distribution points based on the following criteria:
  • If a protected distribution point with the content provisioned exists, the client will not use unprotected distribution points.

  • If a protected distribution with the content provisioned does not exist, the client will use unprotected distribution points.

If the check box is cleared, then regardless of whether or not a protected distribution point with the content provisioned exists, the client will not use unprotected distribution points.
