Examine existing Configuration Manager 2007 clients.

Clients must have Configuration Manager 2007 SP2 installed before you can upgrade them with the client hotfix.

Install hotfix KB977384 and Configuration Manager 2007 R3 on site servers in your hierarchy.

Upgrade each primary site in your hierarchy with the hotfix and Configuration Manager 2007 R3 starting from the top-level site and working downwards. Once complete, upgrade any secondary site servers. You can obtain the hotfix from the Microsoft Support web site.

Important
If the SMS Provider is running on a remote computer, update this computer with the hotfix.

Install hotfix KB977384 and Configuration Manager 2007 R3 on computers running the Configuration Manager console.

Upgrade each computer running the Configuration Manager console with the hotfix and Configuration Manager 2007 R3. If you do not upgrade the Configuration Manager console, you will not be able to use any of the new features of Configuration Manager 2007 R3.

Use software distribution to install the client hotfix on computers in your hierarchy.

Monitor the upgrade process and resolve any deployment issues.

You can use Configuration Manager 2007 inventory to monitor which computers have applied the update. For more information, see Inventory in Configuration Manager.

Configure the following collections for power management:

• Collection for reporting of baseline data.
  
  
• Collection of computers to be excluded from power management.
  
  
• Collection of computers incapable of power management.
  
  
• Collections of computers to which power plans will be applied.
  
  
• Collections of computers that are running Windows Server.
  
  

Use the collections listed to help you manage power settings for computers in your site. You can create multiple collections and apply different power plans to each collection.

Enable the power management client agent.

This configures computers to begin to collect and send power management information to your Configuration Manager 2007 site. For more information, see How to Enable or Disable the Power Management Client Agent.

Collect power management information from client computers.

Power management data is reported by clients through Configuration Manager 2007 hardware inventory. Depending on the hardware inventory schedule that you have configured, it might take some time to retrieve inventory from all client computers.

Import the power management reports to your site.

Run the report Power Computer Activity.

The Power Computer Activity report displays a graph showing monitor, computer, and user activity for a specified collection over a specified time period. This report links to the Power Computer Activity Details report which displays the sleep and wake capabilities of computers in the specified collection. Run the report Power Consumption or Power Consumption by Day.

The Power Consumption and Power Consumption by Day reports display the total monthly power consumption in kilowatt per hour (kWh) for a specified collection over a specified time period. For more information, see About the Power Consumption Report for Power Management and About the Power Consumption by Day Report for Power Management.

Run the report Power Environmental Impact or Power Environmental Impact by Day.

The Power Environmental Impact and Power Environmental Impact by Day reports display a graph showing carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions saved by a specified collection of computers for a specified period of time. Run the report Power Cost or Power Cost by Day.

The Power Cost and Power Cost by Day reports display the total power consumption cost for a specified period of time. For more information, see About the Power Cost Report for Power Management and About the Power Cost by Day Report for Power Management.

Run the report Power Capabilities.

The Power Capabilities report displays the power management capabilities of computers in the specified collection. For more information, see About the Power Capabilities Report for Power Management.

Run the report Power Settings.

The Power Settings report displays an aggregated list of the current power settings used by computers in a specified collection. For more information, see About the Power Settings Report for Power Management.

Exclude any required collections of computers from power management.

Select existing power plans or create new power plans for collections of computers in your organization.

Apply these power plans to computers.

Run the report Power Computer Activity.

Run the report Power Environmental Impact or Power Environmental Impact by Day.

Run the report Power Cost or Power Cost by Day.

The Power Cost and Power Cost by Day reports display the total power consumption cost for a specified period of time. For more information, see About the Power Cost Report for Power Management and About the Power Cost by Day Report for Power Management.

If computers in your site have not entered sleep or hibernate, run the report Power Insomnia Report to display possible causes.

The Power Insomnia report displays a list of common causes that prevented computers from entering sleep or hibernate and the number of computers affected by each cause for a specified time period. For more information, see About the Power Insomnia Report for Power Management.

If multiple power plans are applied to one computer, then the least restrictive power plan is applied. Run the report Power Computers with Multiple Power Plans to see computers with multiple power plans applied.
