Use the Task Sequence Editor to modify new or existing task sequences. Task sequence can be organized into groups of task sequence steps. If either Install an existing image package or Build a reference operating system image package was selected when the New Task Sequence Wizard was run, the task sequence will contain a set of baseline task sequence groups and steps. If Create a new custom task sequence was selected when the New Task Sequence Wizard was run, then an empty task sequence is created.

The Task Sequence Editor displays the task sequence groups and steps in the tree view on the left side of the editor window. When you select a task sequence group or step, its properties are displayed next to the tree view with two or more tabs that you can select to configure settings for that task sequence group or step. Task sequence groups and steps can be nested within other task sequence groups.

Add

Click Add to add one of the following items to the task sequence list. The item will be added after the task sequence group or step you have highlighted in the task sequence list box.
  • New Group: Adds a new group of task sequence steps to the task sequence list box.

  • General Steps: Expands to display a list of basic task sequence steps that you can add to the task sequence list. General steps can be used in any task sequence regardless of whether the task sequence is deploying an operating system.

  • Deployment Steps: Expands to display a list of task sequence steps that are specific to the deployment of an operating system image package.

  • Build Steps: Expands to display a list of task sequence steps that are specific to the creation of a reference computer and the capture of its image.

Remove

Select a task sequence group or step in the task sequence list box and click Remove to delete it from the task sequence list box. If you remove a group, all task sequence steps in that group are also removed.
Move Up

Select a task sequence step or group in the task sequence list box and use the Move Up arrow to change its position in the list. The position of a task sequence in the list determines when that task sequence is run on a destination computer.
Note
When you move a task sequence step, be aware that you can move it into and out of groups in the task sequence using this button. Moving a task sequence step into and out of groups can affect the way the task sequence step and the task sequence itself runs. For example, if you move a stand-alone task sequence step that immediately follows a task sequence group up one click, it will not appear to have moved, but will be indented in the task sequence tree view. The indentation indicates that the task sequence step is now part of the task sequence group and is no longer stand-alone. Use the tree view to note the position of the task sequence step in the task sequence as you move it.
Move Down

Select a task sequence step or group in the task sequence list box and use the Move Down arrow to change its position in the list.
For example, if you move the last task sequence step in a group down one click, it will not appear to have moved, but will no longer be indented as part of the group. Use the tree view to note the position of the task sequence step in the task sequence as you move it.
