After you have upgraded the primary site that the Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003 Administrator console connects to, you should upgrade any remote administrator consoles used to administer the site using the following procedure.

When upgrading SMS 2003 Administrator consoles using the Configuration Manager Setup Wizard, a new Configuration Manager console is installed side-by-side with the existing SMS 2003 Administrator console. After the Configuration Manager console is installed, there is no option to separately uninstall the SMS 2003 Administrator console and both consoles will be uninstalled when the Configuration Manager console is uninstalled. If you will not need an SMS 2003 Administrator console to manage an existing SMS 2003 primary site, you should uninstall the SMS 2003 Administrator console before installing the Configuration Manager console.

To uninstall the SMS 2003 Administrator console during the upgrade process, the /upgrade Setup command line option can be used instead of the Configuration Manager Setup Wizard. When the command Setup /upgrade is used to upgrade an SMS 2003 Administrator console, the existing SMS 2003 Administrator console is uninstalled before the new Configuration Manager console is installed.

Note
After upgrading an SMS 2003 Administrator console, the new Configuration Manager console might not be connected to the site database. To connect the Configuration Manager console to the Configuration Manager site database, use the Connect to Site Database Wizard. For more information about the Connect to Site Database Wizard, see Connect to Site Database Wizard.

To upgrade an SMS 2003 Administrator console using Configuration Manager Setup

  1. Before running Configuration Manager Setup to upgrade an Administrator Console, ensure that you have properly prepared your computing environment to install a Configuration Manager console. For more information about Configuration Manager prerequisites, see Prerequisites for Installing Configuration Manager.

  2. Select Configuration Manager 2007 from the autorun screen, or start Setup.exe from the Configuration Manager installation media or from a copy of the installation media located on a network share or other storage media to start the Configuration Manager Setup Wizard.

  3. Click Next on the Welcome page.

  4. Select the Install or upgrade an administrator console option.

  5. On the Microsoft Software License Terms page, click I accept these terms and then click Next.

  6. On the Customer Experience Improvement Program page, you must choose a participation selection.

  7. On the Installation Summary page, review the summary details for the site installation before continuing. To make changes to any details, click Previous until you return to the page in the wizard where you set the detail. After making any necessary changes, return to the Summary page.

  8. When prerequisite checking has completed, review any messages in the results pane of the Installation Prerequisite Check page to verify that all prerequisites have been met for installation to continue. If no prerequisite errors are found, you can click Begin Install to begin the upgrade process. If prerequisite errors are found, you can review the ConfigMgrPrereq.log file located in the root of the system drive for more information about how to resolve any issues found. When all discovered prerequisite check failures have been resolved, return to the Prerequisite Check page and re-run the setup prerequisites check.

    Important
Configuration Manager Setup cannot continue until all prerequisite checks have completed with no errors.
  9. Review the installation steps on the Installation Status page to verify the actions taken and their status as Configuration Manager is installing.
