When performing hardware inventory, the hardware inventory client agent retrieves information about installed computer hardware by reading Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) data classes. In some cases, WMI data classes to be inventoried may not be present on a client system. For example, Windows Vista clients have new WMI data classes that Windows XP clients do not, but the class information is set to be inventoried in the default Configuration Manager 2007 SMS_def.mof file.
When a client attempts to inventory a nonexistent data class, no status message is sent to the site server. To determine whether a client is attempting to inventory a nonexistent WMI data class, you can review the client InventoryAgent.log log file for entries similar to the following:
