Chapter Summary

The first step in installing SMS is configuring SQL Server to support the SMS database. An SMS site server installation can begin after SQL Server and Windows NT/2000 Server are prepared.

As installation proceeds, the Windows NT/2000 Server is modified to support SMS. Post-installation tasks must be completed to configure SMS to the network environment. Common post-installation tasks start with assigning site boundaries. Next, client agents and client installation methods are enabled and configured.

Upgrading SMS 1.2 to SMS 2.0 is a complex task that requires the completion of pre-installation tasks to ensure a successful upgrade. Once an upgrade has begun to convert the database, it should not be interrupted.
