Add Snap-Ins to the SMS Administrator Console

After you install the SMS tools you want to use, you can access them by navigating to the appropriate items in the SMS Administrator console and by using SMS menu options. However, to access tools (or snap-ins) that are not integrated with SMS, but that can run within the SMS Administrator console, you must add them to the SMS Administrator console after you have installed them.

To add a snap-in to the SMS Administrator console, you must make sure that the console is in Author mode. Perform steps 1 through 6 if the console is not in Author mode. If the console is in Author mode, proceed to step 7. (For more information about running the SMS Administrator console in Author mode and creating custom consoles, see the MMC Help.)

  1. In the upper-left corner of the SMS Administrator console title bar, click the tool icon Tool Icon.
  2. On the menu that opens, click User Options.
  3. In the Options dialog box, select Always open console files in Author mode, and then click OK.
  4. Click the Console tab, and then select Author Mode from the Console Mode list.
  5. In the upper-left corner of the SMS Administrator console title bar, click the tool icon Tool Icon, and then click Close.
  6. To restart the SMS Administrator console, click the Start button, point to Programs, Systems Management Server, and then click SMS Administrator Console.
  7. On the Console menu, click Add/Remove Snap-in.
  8. To add the snap-in to the SMS Administrator console, in the Snap-ins added to list, click Systems Management Server.
  9. Click Add.
  10. In the Available Standalone Snap-ins dialog box, select <snap-in_name>.
  11. Click Add, and then click Close. The snap-in appears in the Add/Remove Snap-in dialog box.
  12. Click OK.

The snap-in is added to the console.
