An SNMP trap is a
packet of data that includes information that is captured about a
specified event, such as a failed attempt to log onto a Windows NT
computer. Using the Event to Trap
Translator, you specify which events are translated. You also
specify which computers are monitored for these events. The data
for each event is gathered from Windows NT event logs, such as the
application log, the security log, and the system log. SNMP traps
are sent to the location you specify when you configure the SNMP
service. You can use any SNMP trap viewer to view the contents of
an SNMP trap. Each SNMP trap that is created includes at least the
following ten components:
Object ID
Network address
Generic trap ID
Specific trap ID
Timestamp
Message
User name
Computer name
Event type
Event category
You can specify that events be translated into traps based on
the following criteria:
Event source
Event ID
The number of occurrences of a particular event
The number of occurrences of a particular event in a specified
time
