About the Remote Control Client Viewer

When you initiate a remote control session on a client, the Remote Control Client Viewer window appears. You use this window to view and work on the client desktop.

When the Remote Control Client Viewer window is active, all mouse actions and keystrokes (except CTRL+ALT+DELETE, CTRL+ESC, ALT+TAB, and the special hot key sequences you can define for the Remote Control Client Viewer are passed to a selected client. The client processes these keystrokes as if they were typed at the client itself.

You can use the icons in the top right corner to carry out commands that are typically executed through key stroke sequences that cannot be passed to the remote client. You can also enlarge a portion of the client desktop for a more detailed view, if needed.

The following icons are available:

Picture of Tasklist button  Start/Tasklist button
Simulates the Start button on the client desktop (or simulates Task List on Windows NT 3.51).
Picture of ALT+TAB pass through button  ALT+TAB pass through
Simulates the ALT+TAB sequence on the client desktop.
Picture of Gold Key button  Gold key
Simulates the CTRL+ALT+DELETE sequence on Windows NT client desktops. This icon is not present for non-Windows NT clients.
Picture of ALT+KEY pass through button  ALT+KEY pass through
Allows ALT+key sequences to be passed to the client desktop instead of being interpreted locally.
Picture of Navigation window button  Navigation window
Starts the Area Box, which you can use to enlarge a portion of the client desktop. When you start it, you can move the Area box around to focus on different areas of the desktop. For instructions about using the Area box, see Use the Remote Control Navigation Window.

Important     The key sequences CTRL+ALT+DELETE, ALT+TAB, and CTRL+ESC are never passed to the selected client. CTRL+ALT+DELETE is processed only by the SMS Administrator console. On Windows NT clients, you can use the Gold key button (in the upper right corner) in the Remote Control Client Viewer to send the CTRL+ALT+DELETE sequence to that client.

The SMS Administrator console computer also inherits the keyboard settings of the selected client when the Remote Control Client Viewer window is active. For example, if the selected client keyboard has CAPS LOCK on, the SMS Administrator console keyboard passes keystrokes to the client with CAPS LOCK on.

While a client is being controlled, the client keyboard and mouse remain active. Both the administrator using the Remote Control utility and the user at the client see all keystrokes entered from either keyboard. If the administrator and the user at the client are typing simultaneously, the client receives characters from both sources, possibly producing a garbled message.

Note    If you are remotely controlling a client and a maximized MS-DOS window appears in the Remote Control Client Viewer window, mouse controls do not function. To restore mouse controls, press ALT+ENTER to reduce the size of the MS-DOS window.

The graphics display of the SMS Administrator console affects how the remote client is displayed in the Remote Control Client Viewer. If the SMS Administrator console has the same resolution as the client or higher, the remote client's screen is displayed in the same resolution as the SMS Administrator console.

If you view the selected client's display in a sized window or if the client has a higher-resolution video display, the Remote Control Client Viewer window cannot display the client's entire desktop. To move the display within the Remote Control Client Viewer window, use the window's scroll bars or use the navigation window.
