Ping Tool

You can use Ping to test whether a client is connected to your network or to test connectivity before initiating a Remote Tools connection. You access Ping by selecting a client resource in the SMS Administrator console and then selecting Remote Tools from the Action menu. Ping is available from the Remote Tools window and can be used on all remote clients on any network topology.

Ping sends packets to the targeted computer by using your network's default protocol. When, and if, a response returns from the targeted computer, Ping sends additional packets to the targeted computer for a total test duration of 4 seconds. Ping analyzes the number of packets returned and the elapsed time to determine the reliability and speed of the communications channel to the target. The thermometer at the left of the display shows the relative stability of the connection to the client, representing the Packets/Second value and by color code (red = slow, yellow = fair, green = fast).

The test statistics that appear on the right side of your monitor include the test time (in seconds), total packets received from the client, packets/second (average number of packets received per second), and total errors (number of errors that occurred during the ping test). You can use this information to determine the relative speed of the connection to the client.

Note   SMS 2.0 Ping is different than the standard TCP/IP Ping utility. This Ping tool can be used to test client connectivity regardless of the protocol being used.
