SMS Server Architecture

The SMS server architecture can be divided into two separate tiers:

SMS components
SMS components are analogous to the mechanisms and devices that enable the elevator, the phone system, and the electrical system in an office building to work properly. When you make changes through the SMS Administrator console, SMS services and components start working to complete the operation successfully, whether it is software distribution, hardware inventory, software metering, or any other administrator-initiated or scheduled SMS task, feature, or tool.
WBEM interface to SMS architecture
The WBEM interface to the SMS architecture is a description of the SMS framework, much as building plans describe a building. As you become more familiar with SMS, you might find that your organization needs to provide SMS functionality in a slightly different fashion. You might need to gather additional inventory information and store it in your SMS site database. Or, you might decide that your organization would benefit from a customized management report. The WBEM interface enables you to customize SMS for optimal change and configuration management.
