Extending the Inventory Overview

Although Systems Management Server (SMS) can automatically gather hardware and software information from clients, you might want to gather additional information that is not reported by default. You can customize what inventory is collected in the following ways:

• You can use MOF Manager to customize SMS_def.mof to modify what hardware information is gathered and reported on clients and place the customized file in the \SMS\Inboxes\Clifiles.src\Hinv directory on the site server.

• Note   If you modify an individual SMS_def.mof file on a client, SMS will overwrite it with the .mof file on the site server.

• As in SMS 1.2, you can use Management Information Format (MIF) files to add information to the client inventory. You can use NOIDMIFs to extend the hardware inventory by adding attributes and classes to existing architectures on a client, and you can use IDMIFs to add a new architecture — and attributes and classes — to the SMS site database.
