Before installing the Custom Updates Publishing Tool, you must ensure that the computer you plan to use can support the tool and that the user who initiates the installation has the proper security rights. For information about the minimum system requirements for the Custom Update Publishing Tool, see System Requirements for the Custom Updates Publishing Tool. For information about the security needed to install and use the publishing tool, see Security Considerations for the Custom Updates Publishing Tool.

If you plan to install the Custom Updates Publishing Tool on a local SQL Server 2005 64bit database or on a remote computer running any edition of SQL Server 2005 or SQL Server 2005 Express Edition, you must first run a script to create the database on the database server. For more information about running the database creation script for the Custom Updates Publishing Tool database, see How to Pre-Create the Publishing Tool Database

Use the following procedure to install the Custom Update Publishing Tool.

To install the Custom Updates Publishing Tool

  1. To initiate the Custom Updates Publishing Tool Setup, click Custom Updates Publishing Tool from the SMS 2003 R2 Setup screen or manually run Setup.exe from \ITCU\PubTool on the SMS 2003 R2 CD.

  2. On the Welcome page of the Custom Updates Publishing Tool Setup Wizard, click Next.

  3. Click I accept the license agreement and then click Next.

    Note
You must accept the license terms and conditions to continue. Click Print license agreement to print a copy of the license terms.

Setup verifies that Windows Installer 3.1 and .NET Framework 2.0 are installed on the computer, and if not, installs them. If Setup fails to install any of these components, it displays a dialog box with the associated installation error.

  4. Register the product by entering your name, the name of the organization that will be using the Custom Updates Publishing Tool, and the 25-digit CD product key. The CD key is located on the back of the SMS 2003 R2 product CD case. After you have entered the registration information, click Next.

  5. Select to use a local or remote Custom Updates Publishing Tool database:

Local Database with SQL Server 2005 64bit:

The Select Database Server and Instance Name page displays. Due to a known issue, you must select Remote Database, even though the database server is local. In the Database Server field, enter the name of the local server. Enter the SQL Instance as appropriate and then click Next.

    Important
The local 64-bit database must be created prior to installing the Custom Updates Publishing Tool by using a script located on the installation CD. For more information about using a script to create the database, see How to Pre-Create the Publishing Tool Database.

Local Database with SQL Server 2005 or SQL Express 2005:

The Select SQL instance name page displays. Select the SQL instance from the list, and then click Next.

    Important
To create the Custom Updates Publishing Tool database, the proper SQL permissions must be configured for the user installing the publishing tool. The user installing the publishing tool must be a local administrator with the proper permissions to create the local database.

If SQL Server 2005 or SQL Express 2005 is not installed on the local computer, the Detect and Install Required Components page displays. Click Install to install SQL Server 2005 Express Edition on the local computer. Click Next.

    Remote Database:

Enter the SQL Server computer name and SQL instance name for the remote database, and then click Next. If you do not enter valid names, Setup will fail validation, display an error message, and return to the Database Server and Instance Name page for a valid entry.

    Important
The remote database must be created prior to installing the Custom Updates Publishing Tool by using a script located on the installation CD. For more information about using a script to create the database on a remote computer, see How to Pre-Create the Publishing Tool Database.
  6. Leave the default destination folder selected for the Custom Updates Publishing Tool installation (%programfiles%\Microsoft Custom Update Publishing Tool\) or click Browse to select a different folder, and then click Next.

  7. Select Configure Publishing tool for synchronization role to configure a synchronization host for the publishing tool. If this setting is enabled, the SMS 2003 site server must be installed on the local computer or on a remote computer in the same domain. The following information must be configured:

    • Site Server: Enter the name of the site server in the Site Server text box. By default, the local computer name is listed and needs to be replaced if SMS 2003 is installed on a remote computer.

    • Package source location of Custom Updates scan tool: Enter the path to the Inventory Tool for Custom Updates packages. By default, the system root path is displayed and needs to be changed to the correct location. For example, if the inventory tool is installed in the default location, the package source is C:\Program Files\Custom Update Scan Tool\PkgSource\.

If Setup fails to retrieve the site code and package ID from the information provided, an error dialog box displays and Setup returns to the Synchronization Host configuration page for valid information.

    Click Next.

  8. Click Next to initiate the Custom Updates Publishing Tool installation.

    Note
If an error occurs during the installation, an error dialog box displays with the specific error message. Review the PublishingToolsetup.log file, located in %USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temp, for error messages that might indicate the root cause for the issue.
  9. On the Setup Complete page, click Finish.
