The Settings dialog box in the Custom Updates Publishing Tool contains the Import List, Synchronization, Data Source, Trusted Publishers, and Advanced tabs. You can use these tabs to configure the automatic updates and import locations for software updates catalogs, enable and configure Systems Management Server 2003 catalog synchronization, set the database location for the Custom Updates Publishing Tool, remove publishers that are no longer trusted, configure whether to check digitally signed software updates catalogs for certificate revocation, and disable the per-user MSI warning.

The dialog box contains the elements described in the following table.

Import List tab

Provides the ability to add, remove, modify, or find software updates catalogs. The following elements are available:
  • Automatically check for updates to my catalogs on startup: Specifies that during startup, the Custom Updates Publishing Tool will automatically check for newer versions of the software updates catalogs that have been added to the Import List and display the results on the Custom Updates Publishing Tool Start Page. If there is a newer version of a catalog, it can be imported from the startup page.

  • Import List: Contains a list of all catalogs that have been added to the import list. The catalogs in the list can be imported in bulk by using the Import Software Updates Catalog Wizard.

  • Add: Opens the Add Catalog Dialog Box containing the Choose Path, Name, Description, Support Contact, Require approval of unsigned catalogs from this location during import, and Always flag these updates for publishing options.

  • Find: Opens the Discover and Add External Catalogs Dialog Box which retrieves the discovery list of all vendor catalogs that have been registered with Microsoft and provides the ability to add discovered catalogs to the import file list.

  • Edit: Opens the Modify Catalog Dialog Box which allows you to modify the highlighted software updates catalog. The Path, Name, Description, Support Contact, Require approval of unsigned catalogs from this location during import, and Always flag these updates for publishing settings can be modified.

  • Remove: Deletes the highlighted software updates catalog file from the import list.

  • Remove All: Deletes all software updates catalog files from the import list.

Synchronization tab

Provides the ability to enable and configure the Custom Updates Publishing Tool for the synchronization role. The following options are available:
  • Configure publishing tool for synchronization role: Enables synchronization between the publishing tool and a Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003 site server.

  • Site Server Name: Specifies the SMS 2003 site server NetBIOS name. The site server name is validated when clicking OK or Apply. The required field indicator displays if validation is unsuccessful and a new site server name must be entered.

  • PkgSource location of the scan tool package: Specifies the package location used by the Inventory Tool for Custom Updates. If the inventory tool is installed in the default location, the package source is installed in the %ProgramFiles%\Custom Update Scan Tool\PkgSource local folder and shared as CSTPackageSrc. For a remote site server, enter \\<ServerName>\CSTPackageSrc for the package source location.

  • Details: Displays the following synchronization settings information:

    • Status: Specifies whether a connection to the site server was successful. Click Apply to verify the connection.

    • Site Server: Specifies the configured site server name.

    • Site Code: Specifies the site code for the site server. This information is automatically retrieved.

    • Pkg Source: Specifies the package source location configured for the Inventory Tool for Custom Updates.

    • Package ID: Specifies the package ID used by the Inventory Tool for Custom Updates. This information is automatically retrieved.

Data Source tab

Provides the Custom Updates Publishing Tool database information. The following elements are available:
  • Server Name: Specifies the server name or server and instance names in the text box. The publishing tool connects to this server to access its database. For example, MyServerName or MyServerName\InstanceName. If the server name is entered without an instance name, the default instance is used. The server name is validated when clicking OK or Apply. The required field indicator displays if validation is unsuccessful and a new server name must be entered.

  • Test Connection: Tests the connection to the server specified in the Server Name text box. A message dialog box appears indicating whether the connection test succeeded or failed.

  • Current Connection Details: Displays the following publishing tool database details:

    • Server name: Specifies the configured data source server name.

    • Database: Specifies the publishing tool database name. This information is automatically retrieved.

    • Integrated security: Specifies whether the database uses integrated security.

    • Connection timeout: Specifies when the timeout should occur when connecting to the database.

Trusted Publishers tab

Provides the option to remove trusted publishers added during the Import Software Updates Catalog Wizard. If you clicked Always Accept catalog from publisher during the import process, the publisher is added to the Trusted publishers list. Select a publisher and click Remove to remove a publisher that is no longer trusted.
Advanced tab

Provides the option to control certificate revocation list (CRL) checking and warnings about Windows Installer packages that were installed per-user. The following elements are available:
  • Enable certificate revocation checking for digitally signed catalog files: Specifies that digitally signed software updates catalogs are on the CA approved list. This option is not enabled by default because of the additional overhead to the import process that occurs when the tool determines whether the catalog is on the revocation list. For more information, see the Certificate Revocation and Status Web page (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=65980).

  • Do not display warnings about per-user MSIs: The inventory tool can detect Windows Installer packages only if they are installed per-system. Every time you add an MSI rule, the inventory tool displays a warning to indicate that if the MSI has been installed per-user, it may not be detected unless you configure additional detection rules, such as file version or registry key values. Disabling this setting is not recommended because you might inadvertently configure the inventory tool to detect an MSI without configuring the additional detection rules and might mistakenly assume that the MSI has been properly detected. This setting is stored separately for each user of the SMS Administrator console.
