For a comprehensive list of your computer’s minimum hardware and software configuration requirements to install the SMS 2003 R2 Scan Tool for Vulnerability Assessment, see the SMS 2003 SP2 Supported Configurations, which details the minimum requirements for your SMS site server as well as the minimum requirements for your SMS client computers. The SMS 2003 SP2 Supported Configurations are available from the Systems Management Server 2003 Product Documentation Web page (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=9502).

Minimum Hard Disk Space Requirement

SMS Site Server

To install the SMS 2003 R2 Scan Tool for Vulnerability Assessment, you must have 5 MB of available hard disk space for your installation directory. The installation directory must be formatted with NTFS, must be on a local drive, must not be encrypted, and the total length of the path name must be 200 characters or less. No additional logs are created on the site server, so additional space for logs is not required. The more vulnerabilities you select to scan for, the more space will be required in the SMS site database for each client.

SMS Clients

To install the scan tool on the SMS clients, each client must have an additional 5 MB of available hard disk space for the scan tool and 30 MB for the log files.

Additional Software Requirements

The following are additional software requirements for the SMS 2003 R2 Scan Tool for Vulnerability Assessment:

  • The site server must be running SMS 2003 SP2.

  • You must have Microsoft XML (MSXML) 3.0 or later installed on your SMS site server and on your SMS client computers. All client computers capable of running the SMS 2003 R2 Scan Tool for Vulnerability Assessment should already have a supported version of MSXML on their computers. If not, you can download MSXML from the Microsoft Web site.

  • All clients must be running the SMS 2003 SP2 Advanced Client.

  • All clients and the site server must have MBSA 2.0 installed. The Setup wizard allows you to create a package and program to distribute MBSA by using SMS.

  • If you have a previous version of the SMS 2003 R2 Scan Tool for Vulnerability Assessment, Setup tries to upgrade the previous version. If you have the same version of the SMS 2003 R2 Scan Tool for Vulnerability Assessment, Setup tries to repair it.

Permissions Required to Install

The user account you log on with when you run Setup must have at least db_ddladmin and db_datawriter role permissions to the SMS database. Your account must also have SMS object permissions to create packages, advertisements, collections, and reports. For more information about SMS object permissions, see Scenarios and Procedures for SMS 2003: Security available from the Systems Management Server 2003 Product Documentation Web page (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=9502).
