The following sections describe the hardware and software requirements for the Microsoft Custom Updates Publishing Tool.

Hardware Requirements

The minimum and recommended hardware requirements for the Custom Updates Publishing Tool are as follows:

  • 550 megahertz (MHz) Pentium III-compatible processor minimum; 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster processor recommended

  • 256 megabytes (MB) of RAM minimum; 512 MB or more recommended

  • 10 MB of available hard-disk space. An additional 350 MB of available hard-disk space is required if the Custom Updates Publishing Tool installs Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition

  • Super VGA (1,024x768) or higher-resolution video adapter and monitor recommended

  • CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive

Supported Operating Systems

The Custom Updates Publishing Tool is supported on the following operating systems:

  • Microsoft Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2

  • Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1

Software Requirements

The Custom Updates Publishing Tool has the following software requirements:

  • Microsoft Management Console 3.0 (MMC). You can download the MMC 3.0 from the Microsoft Download Center (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=21788). The MMC 3.0 must be installed prior to running the Microsoft Custom Updates Publishing Tool Setup.

  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 SP1 or later. You can download Internet Explorer 6 SP1 from the Microsoft Download Center (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=21788). Internet Explorer 6 SP1 must be installed prior to running the Microsoft Custom Updates Publishing Tool Setup.

  • Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1. The Custom Updates Publishing Tool Setup installs Windows Installer 3.1, if required.

  • Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0. The Custom Updates Publishing Tool Setup installs .NET Framework 2.0, if required.

  • Microsoft SQL Server 2005 or Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition. The Custom Updates Publishing Tool Setup installs SQL Server 2005 Express Edition, if required.

    Important
    The Named Pipes setting in SQL Server 2005 must be enabled for the Custom Updates Publishing Tool to work properly. If SQL Server 2005 Express Edition is installed by the Custom Updates Publishing Tool Setup, Named Pipes is automatically enabled. If SQL exists on the system prior to Setup, Named Pipes must be manually enabled in the SQL Server 2005 Network Configuration node of SQL Server Configuration Manager.
